Tastes of Summer
There are inches of snow on the ground and inches more to come. I am bored with winter vegetables and itching to get in the garden. Solution? Rob the larder.
I have serious love for the word larder. Isn’t it fantastic?
This summer I canned tomatoes, applesauce, barbecue sauce, peach jam, strawberry jam, ketchup and tomato paste. It was hours of work to pick and process all these treasures. The matching little jars have laid in wait in the basement for many months.

homemade ketchup is a thousand times tastier than store bought
The payoff is now, in mid winter, when I grab a jar and enjoy the fruits of my labor. Sunlit sweetness and fresh air combine with the luscious appeal of handmade to make me transcend the winter blues one biteful at a time.
How do you taste summer in these winter months?

My husband does a lot of canning. We have tomatoe sauce, salsa and ketchup. We usually do applesauce. You’re right, it does transport you right back into summer.

No question – one of my favorite things is blueberry pancakes made with the blueberries we tray-froze in the summer. Eaten on the coldest weekend morning in January.

I just started getting into canning this fall with apple jelly and pear pineapple jelly. And I have been loving the fruits of my labor every morning for breakfast. Trouble is that I’m almost out of jelly! My little stacked jars are almost gone.
Time to start filling the house again with the smell of apples and sugar…

It’s a great time of year to make marmalade!
Wow, I’m so impressed you canned all of that! i usually just eat what’s seasonal and miss summer for that reason

It is just the best thing to do, I have had so much fun and enjoyment and would recommend it to everyone to give it a try.

love the canning I have done it for 30 years, you have to these day with prices and i did not want cancer causing agents in our food, great job

Pardon my ignorance, but your picture implies you can “can” vegetables in a jar? We are trying to avoid canned tomatoes now (we use them in a favorite recipe) and I would be interested in “canning” our own if we can avoid BPA-lined cans, using jars instead!

ETA: I should add, I always assumed the word “canning” meant “storing in cans”…so the pictures of jars surprised me! I swear I’m not dumb. LOL

Canning does happen in jars. I should look up the history because I have wondered myself why in the world it’s called canning.
Unfortunately there is still bpa in most jar lids. Next year I plan to source a bpa free variety.
Would you be interested in a canning workshop/party? I was thinking I might host one next summer to share the love.
Nothing like tasting the fruits of your labor, months later.

How do I taste summer in the winter months? I really miss my fresh herbs, peppers, and tomatoes. But I get my summer tastes by grilling outside when it’s 19f outside and snowing! (I just wear a bit more clothes!)

Grilling is a good idea. We should do that sometime soon. It would be a great photo op too because we have six inches of snow on the ground.
That’s so awesome that you do that much canning! I’d love to do that! Welcome to the Foodie Blogroll!!!
